SUMMARY:Fair Voter Maps in Illinois (LWV Palos Orland Area)
DESCRIPTION:The League of Women Voters of the Palos Orland Area is hosting our next event for voter education: “Fair Voter Maps in Illinois” on Saturday morning\, November 8\, 2025 at 10am.\nJoin us for conversations at 9:30am. At 10 am\, after announcements\, Dr. Kate Donovan\, a member of the Redistricting Data Hub will join our in-person group by Zoom from New York State. Dr. Donovan will explain how and why maps for federal\, state and local districts are created.\nIn Illinois\, a bi-partisan effort to draw fair maps for the state legislative districts has until this spring 2026 to get enough at least 328\,171 signatures to place an amendment to the Illinois Constitution on the ballot. Traditionally\, supporters try to seek double the minimum number of signatures. We will have an opportunity to examine this proposal.\nFree for everyone. This is a hybrid event. To join this presentation by zoom\, please send your name by email to palosorlandlwv@gmail.com mailto:palosorlandlwv@gmail.com . A invitation to join the Zoom event will be sent by November 6\, 2025.\nCheck us out at our new website: https://palos-orlandil.lwv.org/

SUMMARY:Separation of Church and State: History\, Law\, and Democracy (LWV Roselle-Bloomingdale)
DESCRIPTION:Join the League of Women Voters of Roselle-Bloomingdale for a discussion on faith and freedom.\nAs our communities face growing divisions that strain both our social fabric and representative democracy\, civic education is more important than ever. The principle of separation of church and state ensures government neutrality in religious matters—yet it is increasingly in the news. Recently\, a federal judge ruled that Texas’s SB10 law\, requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom\, likely violates both the Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses of the First Amendment. At the same time\, the Internal Revenue Service announced that houses of worship may endorse political candidates without jeopardizing their tax-exempt status\, a dramatic shift from longstanding practice.\nOur keynote speaker\, Sheldon Nahmod\, Distinguished Professor of Law Emeritus at Chicago-Kent College of Law\, is a nationally recognized expert in constitutional law. He will provide historical context on the Founding Fathers’ differing views\, review key constitutional provisions\, and discuss today’s political interpretations of church-state separation.\nFollowing his presentation\, panelists from three faith-based organizations will share how their work addresses issues of religious freedom\, democracy\, and bridging divides: Dr. Vincent Bacote\, Director of the Center for Applied Christian Ethics at Wheaton College\, Chris Crawford\, Senior Director of Civic Strategies at Interfaith America\, and Terry Kyllo\, Lutheran Pastor and Executive Director of Paths to Understanding. A moderated Q&A session will close the event.\nRegister to attend. https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_P69ev-3sQ5ibHFpO-2xbdA\nThis event is open to the public\, and attendees do not need to become a League member to attend. The program will be recorded and posted on the League’s website\, http://lwvrb.org \, for later viewing as well.

SUMMARY:Under Attack: The State of Democracy Around the World (LWV Naperville)
DESCRIPTION:Is the world’s democratic moment coming to an end? What does the future of democracy hold? Join the League of Women Voters of Naperville for our May Ideas Forum featuring Dr. William Muck\, Professor of Political Science at North Central College.\nProfessor Muck will explore global trends in democracy\, highlighting data showing that in every region of the world\, democracy finds itself under attack. He will explore the implications of this democratic decline and focus specifically on the case of American democracy. How do you know when your democracy is in danger and how should you respond? He will also reflect on the dramatic actions taken by the Trump administration and offer thoughts on how they fit within this broader anti-democratic moment.\nWilliam Muck is the chair of the Political Science Department as well as the coordinator for the College’s Global Studies program. He teaches a variety of courses on international politics and foreign policy. His scholarship focuses on international security\, the practice of military intervention\, and the pedagogy of promoting civic engagement. He has been active in presenting research at various international studies conferences around the world. In 2018\, Bill was named a Ruge Fellow by North Central College for his contributions to teaching and learning on campus. He is co-author of the book\, Technology and Civic Engagement in the College Classroom as well as other articles on international security and higher education pedagogy. If you are in the Chicago area you may have seen Bill on ABC 7\, CBS Chicago\, Fox 32 Chicago\, or WGN Evening News offering political analysis. He is also a regular guest host for WCPT 820am radio.
