SUMMARY:A Changing Immigration Matrix (LWV Greater Rockford)
DESCRIPTION:Please join the League of Women Voters of Greater Rockford for a great overview of our immigration system and what to expect from the incoming presidential administration. LWVGR’s Immigration Chair and immigration attorney Sara Dady is presenting.\nWhy is it so hard for people to immigrate “the right way” to the US?\n• US laws for immigration were passed in 1965 and have received no updates in over 30 years.\n• Very few people are eligible to even apply for a green card to the United States.\n• Work visas are limited\, expensive for employers\, and take a long time to process.\n• Immigration courts have a 4 million case backlog and approximately 800 immigration judges.\nAttend our presentation to find out why the immigration system Americans think we have isn’t actually the system we have.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Idea of a Mississippi River Compact (LWV Upper Mississippi River Region)
DESCRIPTION:The idea or a Mississippi River Compact has been rumbling up and down the river for years without getting a real toe-hold. A Mississippi River Compact would be a legal agreement between all ten mainstem Mississippi River states and the Federal Government. If enacted\, a Compact could provide a forum for management over the entire watershed comprehensively using the sovereign powers of both state and federal governments. Is it time now for a Mississippi River Compact?\nIn this webinar\, we will hear from John Stack\, JD\, author of an Note in the Minnesota Law Review examining the feasibility of a Mississippi River Compact; Mayor David Kleis of St. Cloud and Minnesota Senator John Hoffman. We will learn about the legal basis for a potential compact and the recent call by a group of Mayors along the River for a compact. Finally\, we will look at the political situation and what it would take\, at least in one state\, to establish such a Compact.\nThis is a webinar; advance registration is required.

SUMMARY:Should We Abolish the Electoral College? (LWV Jo Daviess County)
DESCRIPTION:SHOULD WE ABOLISH THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE?\nLeague of Women Voters Event Discusses Why It’s Time\nDoes the electoral college system have you scratching your head about how it works and why we use it to elect our President and Vice President? Join the League of Women Voters of Jo Daviess County at 7:00 pm on Monday\, November 25\, at the Galena Center for the Arts\, 971 Gear Street\, for a brief history of the electoral college\, a discussion of its impact on our democracy\, and reasons for changing the system.\nYou will also learn about some of the less-known features of the electoral college that may surprise you. It will also outline the impact the electoral college has had on voter turnout\, how it polarizes the nation\, and other consequences. A few myths about the electoral college will be “busted” along the way. You will learn how an amendment to the U.S. Constitution could abolish this confusing and problem-filled system.\nPresenters will be Rosemary Heilemann\, a retired teacher who has been a member of\nthe League of Women Voters for 45 years in Illinois\, now serving on the board of her local League in Deerfield/Lincolnshire. Her co-presenter will be Barbara Laimins\, a former civics and psychology teacher and current member of the League of Women Voters of Wheaton.\nSince 1970\, the League of Women Voters has supported the abolition of the electoral college in favor of a direct national vote for President and Vice-President. The League of Women Voters of the U.S. has launched a nation-wide campaign to accomplish this goal.\nThis event is free and open to the public and individuals on ALL sides of this issue are welcome and encouraged to attend.
