DESCRIPTION:SHOULD WE ABOLISH THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE?\nLeague of Women Voters Event Discusses Why It’s Time\nDoes the electoral college system have you scratching your head about how it works and why we use it to elect our President and Vice President? Join the League of Women Voters of Jo Daviess County at 7:00 pm on Monday\, November 25\, at the Galena Center for the Arts\, 971 Gear Street\, for a brief history of the electoral college\, a discussion of its impact on our democracy\, and reasons for changing the system.\nYou will also learn about some of the less-known features of the electoral college that may surprise you. The presentation\, followed by an audience question and answer session\, will explain why the framers of the Constitution created the electoral college and their intent in doing so. It will also outline the impact the electoral college has had on voter turnout\, how it polarizes the nation\, and other consequences. A few myths about the electoral college will be “busted” along the way. You will learn how an amendment to the U.S. Constitution could abolish this confusing and problem-filled system.\nPresenters will be Rosemary Heilemann\, a retired teacher who has been a member of\nthe League of Women Voters for 45 years in Illinois\, now serving on the board of her local League in Deerfield/Lincolnshire. Her co-presenter will be Barbara Laimins\, a former civics and psychology teacher and current member of the League of Women Voters of Wheaton.\nSince 1970\, the League of Women Voters has supported the abolition of the electoral college in favor of a direct national vote for President and Vice-President. The League of Women Voters of the U.S. has launched a nation-wide campaign to accomplish this goal.\nThis event is free and open to the public and individuals on ALL sides of this issue are welcome and encouraged to attend.
