The FBI is required by law to collect data about hate crimes, but local jurisdictions aren’t required to report incidents up to the federal government. As a predictable consequence, the FBI’s data is incomplete. ProPublica is collecting and verifying reports to create a national database for use by journalists, researchers and civil-rights organizations. ACTION NEEDED: : SUPPORT HB 3099 and HB426 Please contact your State Representative and ask for SUPPORT for HB 3099. Urge him or her to vote YES on HB 3099 to prevent deputizing police officers to carry on immigration and enforcement work. In addition, please urge your legislator to vote YES on HB 426, establishing schools, universities, and healthcare facilities as safe zones which would not grant access to Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) or agencies working on behalf of ICE without a valid court-issued warrant. WHY IT MATTERS: HB3099: There is a movement currently to deputize local police officer to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The League of Women Voters of Illinois Immigration position states, “The League of Women Voters of Illinois opposes the deputization of state and local police to enforce immigration laws in Illinois.” HB426: Over the last eight years, nearly 3 million people were deported. The US League position states: “All persons should receive fair treatment under the law. In transition to a reformed system, the League supports provisions for unauthorized immigrants already in the country to earn legal status” Half a million immigrants in Illinois currently are undocumented. Approximately 43,000 undocumented children are enrolled in school in Illinois. Children should feel safe at school. The Immigration Safe Zones Act would ensure that immigration officials are not allowed on any school campus unless they have a valid, court issued warrant that is reviewed by the appropriate personnel at the school.
