Name: Mike Dimitroff

Position for which you are a candidate: Wayne Village Trustee

Why are you seeking this position?

I have been a resident of Wayne for 27 years. During that time, I have come to love and appreciate the unique character of this village. My wife and I have proudly raised two sons here. We enjoy participating in the equestrian activities unique to this area. Wayne’s approximately 2300 residents are spread out over an area comprising more than 3700 acres. This population density is a fraction of what is found in surrounding communities and is not the result of random chance.
Almost 90 years ago, two of the area’s large landowning families entered into an agreement to develop their land in the western half of the village. Their vision was to ensure the properties would be used for single family homes on parcels of 4 acres or more. Over the years, our village leaders have codified those agreements and furthered the interest of protecting the open and historic character throughout the rest of Wayne.
Volunteering to be a trustee for the Village of Wayne gives me an opportunity to give back to my community in a tangible way. My goal as a trustee is to preserve the traditions and sense of community which has always been a part of our village. This includes maintaining the historic district and surrounding neighborhoods, protecting open spaces, and continuing to promote the equestrian heritage responsible in large part for developing this town in the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition, I will work to maintain Wayne’s residential nature and protect it from the kind of commercial development that surrounding communities embrace.

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

In addition to being a long-time resident of Wayne, I have served on the Board of Trustees for a total of almost 8 years. I understand how our village government works and the community we serve. Residents on the west side of the village are primarily situated on lots of 4 acres or more. Those on the east side are generally residing on 2 acres or less with the county line forming the distinction. The historic district and surrounding areas provide more of a neighborhood “feel” while those living outside of this area tend to live on larger lots which offer a greater degree of privacy. Lot sizes of 2 acres more allow for stabling a limited number of horses with many of those lots having legal equestrian easements. Many people have come to Wayne because we offer a level of privacy not available in other suburban communities. They value the sense of calm and peace that physical distance can provide. Others come to Wayne because they see benefits of living in a small community. I bring a considered approach to addressing issues for both. I always try to consider the interests of maintaining the quiet, residential nature of Wayne without being too rigid ; of being open to change while considering its impact on the community as a whole.

What will be your highest priorities if elected?

My highest priority as an elected official is assuring the public safety of our residents. Our community strongly supports our local police department. I have and will continue to promote policies and initiatives that give our residents the high level of protection they deserve. That includes hiring the best officers and providing them with the tools they need to be effective.
I have also been fortunate to lead the Village’s Public Works Committee for the past several years. Our Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining our public areas and roads through the wide range of climate conditions we experience. I was able to bring in a professional public works director with decades of experience to lead the department. With his help, we have upgraded our capabilities and are better prepared than ever to tackle the situations that may arise. Promoting public safety through the best means available will continue to be my highest priority.
In addition, I will continue to support events that bring together those who also enjoy giving back to their community.

I will participate in the candidate meet & greet:
