Position for which you are a candidate: Illinois Representative District 65
Why are you seeking this position?
Scientists don’t typically run for office, but for me, that changed in 2022, when yet another school shooting took the lives of 19 children and two of their teachers in Uvalde, Tex. Standing at a courthouse vigil yet again for the victims of mass shootings, I became determined to fight for safer communities. Then just weeks later, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, stripping women of rights for their own bodies. I was outraged. The current IL65 representative does not support common sense gun-safety laws or a woman’s right to choose. I knew we deserved better representation that accurately reflects our communities – that’s when I decided to run.
While these issues motivated me to run, my background as an environmental microbiologist is where I feel I can contribute the most.
What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?
As a scientist with an expertise in microbiology, I’ve spent my career finding innovative ways to conserve energy, eliminate air and water pollution while reducing costs to businesses. I approach data objectively and worked with people from across the globe who have different experiences or areas of expertise to find the best solutions. With 12 patents, my record demonstrates the qualities of innovative thinking, patience, persistence and attention to detail. By nature, scientists are independent but value collaboration, understanding that solutions matter more than individual egos, or in the case of politics, party loyalty. This means I approach data objectively, not emotionally and not just following party lines. I am open to innovative ideas and have patience and the persistence to follow up on the details. Outside the lab, family and volunteering in my community have been my priorities. Issues that matter most to me include climate change, gun safety, childcare and reproductive rights. As a mother and grandparent, I understand the challenges of balancing family and work. I’m motivated by the residents I’ve talked to. In Springfield I will work tirelessly to build and protect healthy communities. Springfield has lots of lawyers but could use some scientists.
What will be your highest priorities if elected?
Climate change is the overarching problem facing my district, the state, the country and the world. It must be addressed now. However, the daily reality in this district is that families are struggling with costs and their inability to find and afford safe childcare, good healthcare, mental healthcare and attainable housing. Expensive or inadequate childcare and public transportation present an often insurmountable barrier to parents who need or want to work. A cycle is created: if parents can’t get to work, businesses won’t have enough workers. Families need support.
