Name: Susan Kerr

Position for which you are a candidate: School District U-46 Board

Why are you seeking this position?

I am running for my third term because the district has major initiatives that I would like to see completed. These include

(1) The selection of a new superintendent

(2) The transition to a grade 6-8 middle school and the expansion of pre-school.  This will involve curricular revisions, support for teachers and students, and boundary changes.

(3) The expansion of U-46 rising, an initiative which is bringing rigor, collaboration, and critical thinking into the classroom.  I have been impressed not only by the presentations the board has received on this subject, but also by the student engagement and enthusiasm I have seen on my visits to classrooms.

(3) The expansion of career pathways in our high schools, including the introduction of an International Baccalaureate (IB) program to the academy at Elgin High School

(4) Multiple building projects if the referendum passes.

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

As a school board for the past 8 years I have become knowledgeable about budgets, curriculum, and the general administration of a large district.  I have attended multiple school board conferences and events which have given me additional training and knowledge.  As board president, I meet regularly with other presidents of large districts and we share ideas and experiences.  I have also become quite familiar with how the legislative process works in Springfield and know several of our local legislators.

What will be your highest priorities if elected?

The highest priority is finding a new superintendent to lead U-46.

Other high priorities are transitioning to a grade 6-8 middle school, improving student achievement and closing the achievement gap, addressing our facility needs, and maintaining a balanced budget and a healthy financial situation

Will you be attending the Candidate Night?  Yes
