Name: Laura Bedolla
Position for which you are a candidate: Gail Borden Library Board
Why are you seeking this position?
As a first generation daughter of Mexican immigrants, the library was a home away from home for my family and I. The library served as a place where all were welcomed to learn and have fun regardless of socioeconomic status, level of education, or career. The Gail Borden Public Library has always served an important and central role in my life as a safe haven. It was the place where I practiced my reading as I learned to speak English. It was also the place where I studied during college and graduate school and the place that helped launch my professional career. I am seeking a Trustee position because I hope to give back to the library and community that has given my family and I so much.
What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?
I began my career at Gail Borden Public Library as a teenager working as a Library Page. I spent six years at the library in a variety of positions that ranged from organizing events to helping individuals locate books and resources. Additionally, I have served as a board member for the Gail Borden Public Library Foundation and I currently serve as a Library Trustee.
What will be your highest priorities if elected?
Among my highest proprieties is ensuring that the library continues to maintain healthy and responsible finances. I look forward to increasing awareness of the library’s many resources and programs. Lastly, I hope to continue working on programming to introduce and enhance literacy services in some of our most underserved populations in the district.
