Name: Rose Martinez

Position for which you are a candidate: Elgin City Council

Why are you seeking this position?

I still have a lot to offer to Elgin. I want to continue supporting several pending initiatives and get those items to the finish line. I know that I am an accurate representation of everyone in Elgin. I vote fairly and with my conscience, knowing that it might not always be the popular vote, but I value the community and its feedback tremendously. I have a track record that shows my ability to work with everyone, even when they have no interest in working with me.

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

My life experiences in the military, serving in different countries, and being a lifelong Elgin resident allow me to bring a broad perspective to the Elgin City Council. This would be my third term, which also gives me knowledge and familiarity with our departments. I also am very proud to say that I have no special interest groups that pull away from my dedication to serving everyone equally.

What will be your highest priorities if elected?

My highest priorities will remain with our core services and safety at all levels in the City. I would also like to focus on bringing our council members back on track to focus on the current strategic plan we are developing, which needs to be the direction of all we do. I want to complete the redesigned traffic flow at the Summit and Dundee intersection to create a safer traffic flow. This is not a roundabout. I would love to get the Sports Complex expansion underway to offset the loss of revenue that we will be seeing as more people are using electric vehicles and diminishing revenues from our Motor Fuel Tax. This tax currently funds some of our road improvement projects, and even though we will be losing that revenue, the electric vehicles will also provide wear and tear on our roads. And I would also like to look at the federal and state-level opportunities to fund the charging stations needed as we evolve into this sustainable project. The best solutions for this need to come at those levels, not the municipal level, for funds.
