Name: Doug Warlick

Position for which you are a candidate: Kane County Clerk

Why are you seeking this position?

I have been practicing law for over 40 years and I love and respect our Constitutional Republic.  I am truly dismayed with the acrimony and assault on our democratic process and our leadership when our elected officials misrepresent the facts or ignore the law.  That passion culminated after the alleged improprieties in the last election.  I have been involved with the Republican Party, on and off, since the 1990s and I currently serve as the vice-chair of the Geneva Township Republican Central Committee.  When I learned how the incumbent did not follow the law in the last election, I decided to follow my passion and attempt to unseat the incumbent, who has been there for 20 years after being first elected at the age of 63.  This primary election enables the Voters of Kane County to compel the incumbent to retire (which he promised to do 4 years ago anyways), to enable the Office to be refreshed with new ideas and advanced technology.

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

First, as a trial and family law attorney since 1981 as well as a mediator, and I have acquired the requisite skills to assess any situation and develop a strategy to handle the dispute or the litigation.  Thus I will conduct a forensic analysis of the Kane County Clerk’s Office to implement the changes that are long overdue.  I will also appoint a blue ribbon commission to explore ways to improve public service within the statutory requisites.

Second, the cornerstone of public service is community service.  I have built a lifetime of service to the community, including the Geneva Lions Club, many professional bar associations, and my church.  I have received numerous awards for those services, including the K.C.B.A. Community Service Award which is bestowed upon one attorney “with impeccable character and held in high esteem by his peers”, for services beyond the legal profession.  As a resident of Geneva since 1999, I have earned a reputation in the community for my self-less service, a trait that all elected officials ought to have.

What will be your highest priorities if elected?

The incumbent is a career politician who takes this position, and you, the Voters, for granted.  Instead of protecting the Voters of Kane County in the last election, he whimsically failed to follow Illinois Election Law.  For example, he decided that Kane County shall not have provisional ballots even though they are mandated by statute.  Thus when a voter attempted to vote on election day and was advised that he/she already voted, the Illinois Election Code requires the Clerk to permit that person to vote with a provisional ballot if the voter declares that he/she did not previously tender a vote-by-mail ballot.  Therefore, without the provisional ballot there was no investigation whatsoever to ascertain whether or not that person voted twice.  Likewise, in Kane County, there were no spoiled ballots, no initials by election judges from both parties on tens of thousands of vote-by-mail ballots, and no postmarks on vote-by-mail ballots.

I will ensure that our elections are honest, our voter roles are cleaned-up, and I vow to follow the law.  We ought to have confidence in our elected officials so that we do not feel compelled to question the process.
