For several years, The League of Women Voters of the Elgin Area has had a position supporting a fully funded, comprehensive, and coordinated system of treatment, supports, and services for people with mental and behavioral health challenges and/or intellectual/developmental disabilities throughout Kane County. With this in mind, we advocated for the referenda for Mental Health Boards in Dundee Township and Elgin Township. Last year in the Spring 2020 election, voters resoundingly supported this too. The referendum in Dundee Township passed with a 62% yes vote, and the Elgin Township referendum passed with an astonishing 68% yes.
Now that vote is in jeopardy. Recently, Township leaders learned that taxes would not be collected to fund these mental health services.
What can you do? Take action to support the outcome of the 2020 election to establish local mental health boards in Elgin and Dundee Townships and to collect taxes to increase community mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse services.
Contact the following elected officials and indicate that:
1. you were aware that the ballot initiative would cause an increase in taxes; and
2. that you support new funds to better serve our community’s residents who experience mental illness, emotional disturbances, substance abuse, and developmental disabilities.
3. If you voted “yes”, please also mention that you believe your vote is not being counted.
