Name: Joyce J Fountain

Position for which you are a candidate: ECC District 509 Trustee

Why are you seeking this position?

I am seeking this position because I know the difference that quality education makes in peoples’ lives!  As a result, I have advocated for quality education in many roles; as a student, parent, community member, family member, friend and even within educational institutions. Serving as a member of the Board of Trustees is another opportunity to continue advocating for quality education for all!

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

I have served as an advocate with many organizations in the Elgin area including the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin, and the Youth Leadership Academy. I have served on the boards of the former Well Child Conference, the Housing Authority of Elgin, the Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and twenty years on the School District U-46 Board of Education, serving in every officer position.

In addition, I have been a part-time student, and thirty-year employee of Elgin Community College. As an employee I served ten years as a staff member, and twenty years as a full-time sociology professor. Those years afforded me the opportunity to celebrate ECC’s good works, as well as identify areas in need of improvement. I was the recipient of numerous awards acknowledging my work, presented by administration, staff, student organizations and external organizations. All of these experiences collectively, have prepared me to serve as a member of the Elgin Community College Board of Trustees!

What will be your highest priorities if elected?

My priorities will be the same as ECC’s, “to improve people’s lives through learning”.  However to actualize these priorities for all our students, we must be committed to the principles of equity, diversity and financial accountability.
