Name: Richard Johnson

Position for which you are a candidate: Elgin City Council

Why are you seeking this position?

I am Elgin born and raised and I believe that it is a great place to work, play and to raise a family. We have done many great things and the city has come a long way since I was a kid. There are opportunities to do better. We must ensure that we do not overburden our residents with taxes. We must continue to fund our social services so our families will have what they need. We also must continue to attract businesses to Elgin and keep them here. The boon to the economy and jobs that support our residents is essential.  I also want to ensure that our city is a leader in sustainable energy use.

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

I have been a teacher in Elgin U-46 for the past 19 years.  I have a bachelors degree, a masters degree and a juris doctorate.  I have spent my life as an educator and a leader. I am a former president of the Elgin Teachers Association and have spent my entire life in public service.

What will be your highest priorities if elected?

Taxes

We must continue to balance our budget in Elgin but we must be mindful of overburdening our residents.  I will work for a new budget without regressive taxes that hurt our working families.

Social Services

Our social services offices are full of hardworking, dedicated people.  However, our offices are in need of proper resources and staff to continue to support the residents of Elgin.

Business

Elgin continues to be an area of growth and opportunity for businesses.  Small business is the lifeblood of any economy and we need to continue to attract businesses and ensure that we keep them in the city of Elgin.

Sustainability

We must move forward with Elgin as a leader in sustainable energy use. It is environmentally sound and will save taxpayer dollars for our residents.
