Name: Corey Dixon

Position for which you are a candidate: Elgin City Council

Why are you seeking this position?

I’m running for re-election to my second term on Elgin City Council because although we’ve made great strides since my last election, there’s still so much more work that needs to be done. The areas of Public Safety, Homelessness, Social Justice Reform, Historic Preservation, 21st Century City, Downtown Redevelopment, just to name a few and there are many more, are all things that I’ve been passionately working on over the past four years. I’ve done this not only in my policy work, but also through my extensive community involvement. On paper Elgin City Council is a part-time job, but I approach the issues, decisions and duty of serving as if it’s full-time because that’s what it truly requires. I enjoy the work, strategic problem solving & I love helping others. This is why I’m seeking re-election to my second term!

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

I was born and raised in Elgin. I attended Larkin High School, but graduated from Elgin High School. I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Grambling State University, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a concentration in government from Keller Graduate School of Management and a Leadership Certificate in Board Leadership from Northwestern University’s Kellog Center for Nonprofit Management & United Way Board Leadership Institute. I currently serve on the City of Elgin’s Human Relations Commission as Interim-Chair and I’m also a Commissioner with the City of Elgin’s Liquor Commission; Past-Board Chair and current Board Member with Greater Elgin Family Care Center, Executive Board Member with the Alignment Collaborative for Education(ACE), Board Member with Food for Greater Elgin and Committee Member with the City of Elgin’s Annual MLK Weekend Celebration and Making Space Executive Board Member. I’m the Founder of Elgin’s Annual Back to School BBQ Bash event and of the Annual Community Health Resource Fair. I’m an active Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. I also currently work for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office where I serve in the role of Senior Assistant Director of Administration. I’m Married to Janelle Dixon, Esq. and we are the parents of three girls: Jada, Corinne and Kali. We are members of Second Baptist Church of Elgin, where I serve in the position of Deacon.

What will be your highest priorities if elected?

Amongst my priorities will be the continued renewal of Downtown Redevelopment, Homelessness, Social Justice Reform, Public Safety and Historic Preservation. All of those issues are great to work on, but my highest priority will be to serve ALL residents of Elgin in the most empathetic and reasonable manner possible. Speak to the issues that are important to them and truly be a representative and advocate on their behalf.
