Position for which you are a candidate: ECC District 509 Trustee
Why are you seeking this position?
I have a passion for students and serving my community. I believe my experience, skill sets and diverse perspective would be a valuable addition to the governing board of Elgin Community College. I believe in the educational opportunities ECC provides and the pivotal role it plays in our greater community.
What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?
I am a lifelong resident of ECC District 509 and have been an advocate for students and teachers for over 20 years. As an educator I have taught most grades from Pre-school to High School in Dual Language classrooms. I am bilingual and have strong ties to hundreds of families in District 509. Three generations of my family are ECC alums and I have steered many of my students to ECC as well. As a Latina, single Mom, and daughter of immigrants I have an understanding of some of the challenges that many of our students and families face, including minorities, which are the majority of ECC’s student body.
I have volunteered and served in many leadership positions in community organizations, churches and labor unions for over 20 years. I have a BS in International Business and BA in Foreign Languages from Elmhurst College as well as a Master in Education from Northern Illinois University.
What will be your highest priorities if elected?
-Providing equitable, affordable education to all students in our culturally rich community.
-Increasing student completion and success rates and working to bring back many ECC students that left programs due to hardships stemming from the Pandemic.
-Providing governance and fiscal responsibility while maintaining exceptional programs, faculty and staff.
-Providing cutting-edge workforce and development training in areas such as clean energy that can provide good paying union jobs as well as serve to address the climate crisis.
-Providing accountability, integrity, and transparency as a Board member
