Name: Karin Jones

Position for which you are a candidate: Elgin City Council

Why are you seeking this position?

I am running for the Elgin City Council because I love our City. I think Elgin is in a position right now, more than ever, that requires our leaders to be working collaboratively & making progress to continue moving this City forward. Elgin needs council members to focus on the entire community and bring common-sense to the table while recognizing that we have a vast and dynamic population with diverse and different needs. I will work for what is best for Elgin while always being open to listening and learning from all community members.

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

My experience operating and owning a business, participating in a wide variety of community efforts and initiatives, working with the City of Elgin’s various departments over 20 years in a variety of volunteer positions, and currently serving on the Planning & Zoning Commission has helped prepare me to take this next step in giving back to my community in this role. Following local politics, participating in community engagement, and economic development have contributed to my passion for serving as your councilperson.

What will be your highest priorities if elected?

If I am elected to the Elgin City Council, my priorities will include enhancing the relationships between our social services and the City to serve our underserved better. I want to focus on our talented City staff members and all departments and initiate a customer service outreach mechanism in and with our community.  I want to be a part of creating a positive, accurate, and honest narrative about our City and what we have available here. It is also essential to be able to shift gears and address any unforeseen situations. If 2020 has taught us anything, it would be to expect the unexpected. I want Elgin to continue to embrace who we are and what we can become. Loving our history and working towards the best future we can have.
