Name: Jodi Perkins

Position for which you are a candidate: Elgin City Council

Why are you seeking this position?

I am running for Elgin City Council because I recognize that the Elgin City Council needs to demonstrate and exercise more common-sense leadership when making decisions on behalf of the citizens of this great and diverse city.

In recent years, rather than addressing the concerns of the community, the City Council has been bogged down by national issues that do not necessarily apply to Elgin.  We also need Council leadership to be more proactive and less reactive.

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

I am a fourth generation Elginite. I have lived in Elgin my entire life, I know the history and I raised my son here.  Throughout my 32-year career as a flight attendant, I have traveled around the world, visited numerous countries and countless cities. I could have moved to any city, to any country, but I chose to remain in the progressive city of Elgin.

My employer has given me extensive training in cultural awareness, diversity, and inclusion. This training started back in the mid 90’s and has made a significant difference in my career and personal life.

What will be your highest priorities if elected?

It is going to take our economy years to recover from Covid-19. The City needs to be very proactive when thinking about the recovery and making sure it benefits the people who have been hurt the most. Helping the community recover from the pandemic and its fallout will be a top priority, including rebuilding departments that were scaled back significantly during the last year.  Homelessness will be equally important.  As a city we need direction, and we need help finding a solution to curb homelessness in Elgin.
