Name: S. Raja Krishnamoorthi
Position for which you are a candidate:
US Congressional District 8
Why are you seeking this position?
My parents came to this country as legal immigrants when I was an infant. Through hard work and struggle, we were able to achieve the American Dream. I want to ensure that this opportunity remains alive for working families and all those who are striving to achieve a middle-class life. Our country is at a pivotal moment, with growing economic inequality threatening our middle-class. We need to promote policies to help ensure that families can find good jobs, affordable healthcare, and access to a quality education. I hope to continue working on these key issues on a bipartisan basis in Congress.
What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?
For the past three years I have had the privilege to represent my neighbors in the U.S. Congress, working on legislation to improve the lives of Illinois residents and strengthen our community. I am particularly proud that, even in a hyper-partisan environment, I have been able to work closely and successfully with my Republican colleagues on matters of mutual concern such as promoting career and technical education, encouraging the use of renewable energy and fighting the national epidemic of teen vaping.
What will be your highest priorities if elected?
Jobs: I am continuing to work on behalf of the long-sought western access road to O’Hare International Airport that could bring hundreds of new businesses and thousands of new jobs to the west & northwest suburbs of Chicago.
Healthcare: The cost & availability of healthcare remains a huge concern for families throughout my district. I have fought to protect the Affordable Care Act from repeated efforts in Congress to repeal it. I support expanding coverage to more Americans by adding a public option to the insurance exchanges.
Teen vaping: The explosive recent growth in the use of e-cigarettes by our youth is a direct threat to their health and brain development, yet it has gone completely unregulated by the FDA.
Will you attend the February 19th Elgin Candidate Forum? No, I am not able to attend
