Name: Rae Yawer

Position for which you are a candidate:

Illinois Senate District 22

Why are you seeking this position?

I am running to make District 22 an even better place to live, work, and raise a family. I will fight to make sure that every voice in my district is heard and represented in Springfield – Not just lobbyists and big political donors. As a woman of color, I know firsthand what gender discrimination feels like. In every step of my career I have had to work harder than my male colleagues to get the same level of respect. In 2016, men told me I shouldn’t run for office because a woman of color won’t get elected. This prejudiced way of thinking needs to stop. I stand up to and against that bullying mentality. That’s why I’m running for State Senator – to fight for fair representation, equality, justice, and inclusion. I stand up against those who can’t see what is possible.

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

I will apply my professional expertise in finance and business law and my experience as a Park District Commissioner to reduce unnecessary spending so that Illinois’s stretched resources can be used more effectively on programs that are priorities for constituents. I’ll bring my tenacity and financial acumen to my work in the Illinois Senate to achieve savings and still maintain the quality of our programs and services. As a mortgage consultant for over twenty years, I helped hundreds of families carefully plan their budgets to achieve their dreams – that’s why I’ll strive for fiscal responsibility, reducing waste, and mismanagement throughout Illinois. With years of public service experience and a progressive vision, I will bring a much-needed breath of fresh air to Springfield

What will be your highest priorities if elected?

The cornerstones of my political platform include, affordable higher education, mental health awareness and smarter spending. I’ll lead on legislation that increases access to services, programs and treatments that help remove the stigma of mental illness. I will make sure these individuals are not treated as lesser human beings. Together, we can bring everyone through the door! In addition, Illinois property taxes are some of the highest in the country. As part of these reforms, I will work hard to lower the burden on seniors and middleclass families. I’m committed to everyday people and their needs. To give power back to the people, directly representing the interests of ALL people – the actual voters, and empowering workers, the middle class, and historically disadvantaged groups
