Name: Tina Rio

POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:

School District U-46

Why are you seeking this position?

I am concerned about the quality of education in our district. In conversations with neighbors and friends, I keep hearing that parents are not happy with the curriculum, especially the math. The curriculum, in many cases, does not offer enough information for students to be able to evaluate what is being taught. Critical thinking is one of the most sought after skills in the workplace. America is loosing it’s identity in many ways. True American History is not emphasized enough. Polls and reports find college students fail basic civics and history tests.

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

I have been a resident of Bartlett 23 years. I worked as a lunch mom, volunteered often and taught several after school programs. I took care of neighborhood children before and after school at times while I was home. My concern for children, the community and the future of them more than qualifies me for this position.

What will be your greatest challenge if elected?

I believe one of the greatest challenges will be finding ways to ensure students and teachers have the resources they need while representing the taxpayers and avoiding tax increases. I do believe it can be done though. There is much work to be done in allocating the funds that are already available. As board member, I intend to engage the community, improve the curriculum, monitor the budget and advocate for students and teachers.

Will you attend the March 23rd Elgin Candidate Forum? No, I am not able to attend
