Name: Jean Bednar
POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:
Gail Borden Library Board
Why are you seeking this position?
I am running for re-election because I think it’s important to serve my community in this way. I chose the library specifically because it is one of the exceptional, essential, and vital parts of our community – not just because it offers everyone a place for books, research, programs, access, education (and so much more there isn’t room here), but also because a vibrant library such as ours definitely helps boost the entire community, its economic development, home and land values, and collective intellect. I am happy to continue to serve as a trustee if I am re-elected.
What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?
I have served the library first as a referendum committee member, then a Foundation member and then as trustee. I don’t know that I brought with me any specific experience – just an understanding that libraries serve EVERYONE and trustees are most effective when they operate around this basic premise. We can’t have an agenda; we can’t be disproportionately concerned with money and control. As a trustee, I must have a measured understanding of the needs of the District, along with flexibility for allowing the extras – the flair and fun that makes our library and its offerings unique. I think this has worked out quite well for many years now and I’m interested in continuing to help GBPL remain an outstanding place in the community.
What will be your greatest challenge if elected?
Being a good steward of the budget is always a concern/challenge. As a trustee, I need to vote for expenditures in a way that keeps our library up to date in both a practical and a creative way, being frugal and not frivolous. Sometimes, the tough decision to spend money today will save us from a bigger expense later, or helps position us better for growth. Another challenge is helping district members understand that the amount they pay in taxes to cover what the library offers and does for the community is a bargain, in terms of the return on investment. Since money is often an emotional issue, I take my responsibility towards library budget expenditures and stewardship very seriously.
