Name: F John Steffen

POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:

Elgin City Council

Why are you seeking this position?

I am seeking a 4th term to help continue the momentum we have built up after the great recession. Elgin’s jobless rate is low and housing and new businesses continue to come despite the continued threat from the state level and overall exodus from Illinois.

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

I’m born and raised in Elgin and because of my involvement in the community on many levels I have the understanding and connections it takes to bring diverse parts of the community together to move forward. I always strive to take in as many different viewpoints, listen to what people are saying and learn as much as possible on issues before acting. I’ve lived in all different parts of economic levels of town, and the clientele I represent as an attorney have that same diversity.

What will be your greatest challenge if elected?

Maintaining the expected high level of city services like police, fire, public works, and parks and rec while keeping costs as low as possible, especially while the federal and particularly the state get their financial houses in order. Assuming we avoid another recession and the local economy picks up, we need to be mindful as we see in-fill projects and new development come back to Elgin.

Will you attend the March 9th Elgin Candidate Forum? Yes, I will attend the forum
