Name: John Devereux

POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:

School District U-46

Why are you seeking this position?

25 years ago, my wife, Niki, and I moved to the area as we saw the value and promise that this community and U46 had to offer. Over the years, we were involved in the education of our two boys, James and Peter, active in their schools and parent organizations. Through these types of activities, I’ve developed an even deeper belief in the importance and value of education. While my youngest graduated last spring, because of the many great opportunities that our family has been afforded, I feel a sense of responsibility to remain involved and to contribute. I want to see these opportunities continue to be available and extended to all students across our district. As a result, I applied for and was appointed to the Board in mid-2018.

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

I bring perspectives as a parent, community member, area homeowner, and financial professional. With 30+ years of experience, I currently serve as Chief Actuary for an insurance organization where I’ve developed strong research and analytical skills. I am routinely exposed to financial, contractual, legal, and regulatory issues that have relevance to me as a board member. I’ve also been active in school organizations, most recently with the BHS Band Parent Organization where we increased parental engagement, improved communications, promoted the band profile in the community, and enhanced the student experience. Finally, I will bring thoughtful deliberation, a strong spirit of collaboration, and a commitment to engage with the community.

What will be your greatest challenge if elected?

As a board member, I celebrate the successes and the progress made, yet we must jointly and responsibly work on areas requiring continued attention – growth in academic progress across the district, improvements in early education, broader / more equitable access to programs, student and staff safety, facilities upgrades, support systems for students with varying needs, and efforts to attract, empower, develop, and retain a top-tier workforce. However, we’re challenged because there are no easy, one-size-fits all answers. We’re challenged because there will always be resource constraints present. And we are challenged by the simple fact that, while we often need to act urgently, change is difficult and progress takes time.

Will you attend the March 23rd Elgin Candidate Forum? Yes, I will attend the forum
