Name: Susan Kerr

POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:

School District U-46

Why are you seeking this position?

I would like to continue the work I have been doing the past 4 years as a member of the school board. U-46 faces exciting challenges and decisions, including allocation of new funds available through the state’s new school funding model; the implementation of new programs such as career pathways; and the implementation of ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) which will bring new accountablity measures to all school districts. I would like to have a voice in those decisions.

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

As a school board member for the past 4 years I have asked tough questions, done research, and listened to public opinion about issues we have voted on. I have visited many schools and attended many programs throughout the district and listened to the concerns of principals, teachers, staff, and students. I have taken advantage of the opportunities the Illinois Association of School Boards offers (annual conference, webinars, journal, website) to keep informed about issues facing schools not only in Illinois but throughout the country.

What will be your greatest challenge if elected?

There are many challenges facing U-46, from aging facilities to teacher shortages to state finances. I think the biggest challenge is meeting the needs of all our students: providing high achievers with a stimulating curriculum, providing support for our struggling students, and engaging the students who seem to have “tuned out” of school. Making sure all of our students are ready for the next step after high school, whether it is a job, college or the military, is the biggest challenge for U-46.

Will you attend the March 23rd Elgin Candidate Forum? Yes, I will attend the forum
