Name: Kate Thommes

POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:

School District U-46

Why are you seeking this position?

I am running because I love U-46, its staff, families, and diverse communities. My family chooses to stay in U-46 because it is the best choice for my family. I want other families to have positive experiences as well. I want to build U-46’s reputation so others see us as the model I know we are. I want to build our levels of inclusion. I want to grow and expand our Dual Language, Ignite, and AVID programs. I am optimistic about the Pathways program, and want to help ensure we continue to move in the right direction. I will ensure the arts, sports, other clubs and activities are funded. I have a vested interest in keeping these activities going. U-46 is a diverse, exciting district with a lot to offer. I want to be a part of that.

What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

As an Elgin resident for 20 years, I am passionate about quality education. In 1998, U-46 became my home and I haven’t left. Today, I am an educator, parent, and active member our community, working to support our district, its staff, students, teachers, and parents. Professionally, I began my teaching career at Eastview in Bartlett. For 13 years, I have worked at Elgin Community College as an instructor in Adult Basic Education. I serve as the Tutor Trainer for the Literacy Connection. My education includes two educational Masters degrees. I have been a parent in nearly a dozen U-46 schools with three children involved in various district programs. Most recently, I served as co-chair on two different Citizens’ Advisory Council committees.

What will be your greatest challenge if elected?

Our greatest challenge, our diversity, is also our greatest strength. U-46 has students as young as three years old and as old as 21 years. We have families at a variety of income levels. It has families that speak over 90 languages and cultures. We have a variety of programs in over 11 communities in well over 50 buildings. Our taxpayers, staff, and teachers all have a stake in the success of our schools. Each group has their own sets of strengths and challenges As a Board of Education member, I see that my role will be to balance the needs of these groups to the best of my ability. I will take the needs of each group and prioritize them within the issue at hand and make the best decision possible.
