Name: Steve Fiorentino
POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:
School District 300
Why are you seeking this position?
I am seeking a 3rd term on the BOE, honored to have served this community knowing we have completed significant accomplishments. I will continue to embrace working hard for our district and will utilize my skill set to strengthen our district. Improving our facilities, while remaining fiscally responsible will remain a priority. I want to ensure increased student & staff safety, as proven by the recent district wide increase in camera surveillance and implementation of police presence. As an active and engaged board member, I know the importance of a well functioning board that both works in collaboration with our administration, staff and teachers and yet challenges everyone to remain focused on the long term success of our students.
What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?
I bring 25 yrs of management experience. My role in our financial advisory practice equips me to help our district focus on quality financial decisions & fiscal responsibility. I was appointed as BOE Secretary. I have proposed and chaired two new committees: Leg. Affairs & Community Engagement. I currently chair the Facilities Committee & serve on Finance. I utilized my government affairs training to create the first Board Legislative Committee. My advocacy & coalition building experience helped us rally thousands of students & staff, taking on the Sears EDA during my first year. We made many trips to Springfield and successfully rallied the community to influence state legislators. This has allowed the district to realize $30M since 2012.
What will be your greatest challenge if elected?
In my opinion, the following are the critical issues we continue to face: Student Enrollment Increase-We continue to grow in enrollment and our current facility capacity and class sizes could become an issue. Staffing-The teacher and substitute shortage is becoming a greater challenge in high needs areas, especially the sciences, math, special education and speech. Finances-We must continue to be fiscally responsible, as issues will arise due to the Illinois financial crises.
