Name: Shane Nowak
POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:
ECC Trustee
Why are you seeking this position?
I’m running for trustee because I have always had a passion for education and a desire to serve the community. I graduated from Elgin Community College with my associate’s degree in 2002. I then transferred to Northern Illinois University and earned my bachelor’s degree in history. After graduation, I went back to Elgin Community College to obtain my Emergency Medical Technician License. Looking back I can say that I valued my time at Elgin Community College. I want to make sure that future graduates can say the same.
What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?
My background and education is very diverse. I am a graduate of Elgin Community College and professionally I have worked in the higher education field for over six years. I would bring a unique perspective to the ECC Board. Not only have I worked with students to discuss their financial aid, but helped guide them through a complex process. I feel that my diverse experiences and passion for education would help the board of trustees continue to make Elgin Community College successful.
What will be your greatest challenge if elected?
The main issue which is effecting Elgin Community College is declining enrollment. While this is a sign that the economy itself is improving, it has been causing the college some issues. With a lower amount of students enrolling that puts a burden on the taxpayers, ECC finances, future capital investments, and could impact future collective bargaining agreements. That is why it is important for the board to work together collectively to address this issue.
