NAME: Michael Noland
POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:
Judge 16th Circuit Court
1. Why are you seeking this position?
To continue my long-standing commitment to public service in the position of circuit judge in Illinois’ 16th Judicial Circuit, Kane County.
2. What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?
In nearly 20 years practicing law I have: Handled hundreds of cases both Civil and Criminal; Been an assistant Kane County Public Defender; Spent 10 years in the Illinois General Assembly; Served on the Senate Judiciary Committee and Chaired its Criminal Law Committee; Presided over the impeachment of a former governor; Been chief sponsor of a Constitutional Amendment; Sponsored much of Illinois’ Ethics and Campaign Finance Reform; Been the first lawmaker to suggest body cameras for law enforcement; Voted to repeal the death penalty and pass some of the most far-reaching criminal justice reform of recent years for the state of Illinois.
3. What will be your greatest challenge if elected?
Once elected there are, actually, three challenges I would like to take on. First, ensuring greater fairness and equality in our judiciary. This is a standing challenge in all jurisdictions throughout our country. My second greatest challenge will be to exercise accountability for all not only defendants, law enforcement, the parties to a suit, or the lawyers, but for myself and my fellow judges. And, then, thirdly, there needs to be greater access to our courts, specifically, more night courts and social services for our veterans and those suffering from mental illness too often languishing in our jails and prisons. Providing the care and treatment they need, will enable them to lead less punitive and more rewarding lives.
