NAME: Sean Casten
POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:
US Congress District (6)
1. Why are you seeking this position?
I spent 17 years as the CEO of companies that produced clean energy while cutting greenhouse gas emissions and creating new jobs. I met with Peter Roskam and found him unwilling to engage substantively on these issues. Since the 2016 election, a new imperative has emerged. Donald Trump is putting our nation at risk and desperately needs to be checked, but Peter Roskam is not willing to take on that responsibility. I am running for Congress to give our constituents an independent voice who will strive to restore public faith in our institutions, put facts over politics, and address the needs of the people of the 6th Congressional District.
2. What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?
I know how to work across party lines with people who don’t always agree, to solve problems. I have used my background in science, engineering, and business management to create two entrepreneurial businesses that used clean energy technologies to increase energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create jobs. I led two organizations that worked with Congress, state legislatures, government agencies, and small businesses to develop smart energy policies. I understand the importance of listening to those who are knowledgeable and developing public policies based on facts rather than politics.
3. What will be your greatest challenge if elected?
My top priorities are: (1) promote a fact-based approach to climate change that profitably reduces greenhouse gas emissions; (2) support a forward-looking economy that builds the middle class, develops clean energy and infrastructure jobs, and expands programs that assist with college costs; and (3) restores public faith in our institutions and electoral processes. The third goal should be the top priority for the entire Congress in 2019. Republicans have failed to adequately address Russian hacking and interference in our elections. We need a Congress that will stand up to Donald Trump and do what is best for the nation.
