NAME: Donald E. Kramer
POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:
Kane County Sheriff
1. Why are you seeking this position?
The sheriff of the county is responsible for upholding your Constitutional rights, and making sure that law enforcement agencies acting in the county (local, state and federal) also follow the State and Federal Constitutions. I believe that the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, under my leadership, has become one of the finest law enforcement agencies in this state, because we are serving the needs of the community, and yet show compassion and understanding of the social problems that plague our area. I have made sure that our officers are properly trained in dealing with individuals with mental illness/drug addiction, and believe they are better served by social services and not jail. I have not yet accomplished all my goals for the office!
2. What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?
All of my police service has been with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office. Before becoming sheriff, I was a lieutenant for 8 years, sergeant for 15 years, and deputy for 7 years. I have worked every division and position in the agency and know the job as good as anyone. My education is excellent and continuing training and education exceeds 2,000 hours. Being in the position of sheriff for almost 4 years has given me the experience to serve the public well, manage the employees of the office, and continue to keep a balanced budget. My 20 years of community service gives me the best connection to serve your needs by partnering with agencies that I have built great relationships.
3. What will be your greatest challenge if elected?
I am already serving as your sheriff and know what challenges I need to continue to address. I have a Heroin Initiative Task Force that is a fighting the war on drugs. We believe in educating the public on the problem, offering treatment to offenders when possible and trailing the drug trade back to Mexico and China. I also know we need to keep our children safe in school and have been actively training teachers, students, and our officers on how to keep our schools safe. The most difficult part of my job is to recruit, train, and retain competent police officers and corrections officers. We have created an excellent quarterly training program that addresses all the issues that are relevant to today’s problems in our society.
