NAME: Kelly Mazeski
POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:
US Congress District (6)
1. Why are you seeking this position?
I am a scientist, breast cancer survivor and the mother of a daughter with a pre-existing condition who is running for Congress to hold Peter Roskam and Donald Trump accountable for making Americans pay more and get less for their health insurance. I will fight for a public option that lets people buy into Medicare, take on Trump’s dangerous attacks on the environment, and help lead the fight against climate change.
2. What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?
I have served 18 years in local government as a zoning commissioner, village trustee and currently as a plan commissioner. My experience has taught me to be a solutions-oriented leader who listens to my constituents so I can work in their best interests when voting on local matters. I plan to take this same approach with me to Congress. Also, I am a longtime environmentalist who believes climate change is the greatest threat our planet faces. Because of my commitment to the environment I was elected to the Board of Directors at the Illinois Environmental Council in 2014 and I served as an energy and outreach coordinator for President Obama’s 2008 campaign.
3. What will be your greatest challenge if elected?
The greatest challenge I will face if elected to Congress is the gridlock in Washington; however, having served 18 years in local government, often times as the only Democrat in the room, has taught me how to reach across the aisle and work with others. I believe I can take this approach to Congress to pass common sense legislation that the people of the IL-06 support such as investing in infrastructure, ensuring all Americans have access to affordable, quality healthcare, investing in a renewable energy economy, and passing universal background checks.
