NAME: Becky Anderson Wilkins
POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:
US Congress District (6)
1. Why are you seeking this position?
I’m running for Congress because it’s clear that Washington is broken and that Peter Roskam is not representing the constituents of the 6th district. He has voted time and time again to take health care away from millions of Americans when what we need is more access to affordable and high-quality care. There is too much at stake — I can’t just sit by and watch Trump, Ryan, and Roskam move this country in the wrong direction. It’s also clear that money has a louder voice in Washington than constituents. That’s wrong. I’ve pledged since day one of my campaign not to accept a single cent from any lobbyist. When I go to Washington, it will be clear that I’m giving a voice to the people of this district.
2. What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?
I know a thing or two about taking on big fights. As the co-owner of a sixth-generation family business, Anderson’s Bookshop, we’ve fought against corporations and survived by investing in our community. As a Naperville City Councilwoman, I took on the NRA by instituting a gun turn-in program. As a breast cancer survivor, I know first-hand what’s at stake when we talk about health care. I’ve fought for my business, I’ve fought for my community, and I’ve fought for my life. The people of the sixth district need someone who will fight for them in Washington, because it’s clear we don’t have anyone right now.
3. What will be your greatest challenge if elected?
The biggest challenge that I will face if elected is getting this country back on the path forward. We need to ensure accessible, affordable, and high-quality health care as a right for everyone. We need to make sure that corporations and the ultra-rich pay their fair share. We need to get money out of the process so the representatives in Washington know who they’re representing – the people of their district, not their special interest donors. There’s a lot of work to do. As a small business owner, as a city councilwoman, and as a community leader, I have the experience needed to take on these challenges.
Will you attend the 3/6 Dundee candidate forum? No, I am not able to attend
