NAME: Elizabeth Flood

POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:

Judge 16th Circuit Court

1. Why are you seeking this position?

I am committed to public service in the court system. I have worked in public service in the courtrooms in Kane County for over 22 years. I believe my experience in both criminal and civil court lrooms and working both prosecuting and defending cases allows me to understand the issues presented in the judicial system and to be an effective Judge in any courtroom. I am seeking to use that experience to better the court system. I am also hoping to add a more balanced perspective to the judiciary, since currently there is only one other female circuit court judge in Kane County.

2. What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

I worked for over 7 years in the criminal division of the Kane County States Attorney’s office, trying bench and jury trials in every criminal courtroom, including prosecuting cases of serious sexual and physical abuse of children. I then moved to the Civil Division, where for 10 years I advised county officials on how to properly do their jobs under the law, and initiated and defended cases on behalf of the county in State, Federal, and Appellate courts. As a judge, I have presided over cases in criminal and civil courtrooms, and am currently assigned to the family division. For 22 years, I have presided over or worked in nearly every courtroom in Kane County, and I am highly recommended by the Kane County Bar Association.

3. What will be your greatest challenge if elected?

The greatest challenge in the courtroom is to provide services for those in Kane County who cannot afford expensive legal representation, or who need public services outside of the courtroom for mental health, substance abuse, and other social and emotional issues. The judicial system needs to work in concert with the rest of the county offices, the bar association, and private and public service organizations within the county to ensure the safety of the public and that the issues which bring individuals to the court system are not repeated
