NAME: Kevin Tindall
POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:
Kane County Sheriff
1. Why are you seeking this position?
After 27 years of service in the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, with increasing responsibilities and various leadership roles earned, I believe I can effectively lead the department. Two areas where I will do better than the incumbent is fiscal management and working effectively across all sectors of public safety.
First, I will not allow our department expenses to outpace our revenues by $4 million over the last 4 years.
Second, as I have 22 years of fire service, retiring as Assistant Chief, as well as having served as an elected trustee and 31 years EMT/paramedic experience, in addition to my police work, I am uniquely able to work across all three sectors of public safety to effectively share resources, do disaster and emergency planning, and protect the public better and more cost effectively.
My experience and education covers the critical areas of expertise to effectively manage the Sheriff’s Office.
2. What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?
I am the only candidate for Sheriff, in either party, that has a deep diversity of experience in all aspects of public safety, as detailed in the answer to question 1, but more than that, I also have critical experience in regional crisis management work, which is vitally important in events of a natural disaster, active shooter, and even terrorist attacks that occurs in our county, or region. I am currently, Commander of the Bomb Squad, a regional partnership of public safety professionals called in to diffuse a potentially dangerous bomb. I was also on the ground, in a leadership position, when the hostage situation occurred at Delnor Hospital last year. I will lead from the front, not from behind, as your Sheriff.
17 years’ experience on SWAT, having been in charge of SWAT when I stepped away. Co‐founder of the Kane County Fire Investigation Task Force managing resources
3. What will be your greatest challenge if elected?
Clearly it is turning around the fiscal decline of the office in the last 4 years under the incumbent, Sheriff Kramer. He took a balanced budget, under former Sheriff Perez, and let it deteriorate to a $4 million deficit of expenses over revenues. The biggest chunk of that problem was his cancelling of the US Marshal’s contract, costing the county revenues of $2.5 million a year. The Sheriff also failed to locate a vendor for medical services at the jail that was within budget. That cost a shortfall of some $375,000. I will be a better financial steward of the precious taxpayer resources provided to the office.
