Support the City of Elgin's efforts to become a sustainable community through: continued monitoring of the implementation of Elgin Sustainability Master Plan; monitor the progress of the Elgin Sustainability Committee; and continue to participate in and support the goals and efforts of the Elgin Community Garden Network.
In order to promote and increase participation in public government, the local League will continue to collaborate with the Elgin YWCA with educational forums on "Running for Public Office."
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government. Because an open and accountable government is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy, the League advocates for government transparency and freedom of information to keep citizens educated about government actions. While we do not support or oppose any political party or candidate, we do act after study and member agreement on key community issues at all government levels. There has been a recent amendment to the Community Mental Health Act (405 ILCS 20) to authorize counties with no local mental health authorities to form mental health advisory committees comprised of community stakeholders.
