NAMI Illinois
NAMI Illinois is proud to have partnered with the Illinois Department of Corrections. Last year NAMI Illinois trained and certified 150 Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) staff that then trained the entire DOC staff of over 11,500 in the NAMI Illinois mental illness awareness curriculum. Recently representatives from NAMI Illinois toured the Elgin Treatment Center, a new 44-bed facility that will offer hospital level care to state prisoners with serious mental illness. Dr. Melvin Hinton, Chief of Mental Health and Addiction Services for IDOC, said that this facility and a 422-bed residential treatment center in Joliet “are part of the state’s plan to overhaul the care and treatment of an estimated 11,000 inmates who have been diagnosed with a mental illness. That process started several years ago with conversations between behavioral health professionals, IDOC staff and research into what has worked at other states.” “We’re not rebuilding a sytem. We’re building one,” he said.”
