NAME: L. Robert (Rob) Russell

POSITION FOR WHICH YOU ARE A CANDIDATE:

Kane County Coroner

1.  Why are you seeking this position?

I am running for re-election because I want to continue the process of professionalizing the Kane County Coroner’s Office. I want to ensure that Death Investigations are performed correctly the first time by applying national best practices (accreditation standards) that objectively review each case. In essence, my decisions are not based just on my own knowledge and experience, but the knowledge and experience of thousands of experts in the field. It concerns me that my opponent touts that his evaluations will only be based on his own understanding. This is not a professional, unbiased approach no matter how knowledgeable one may be.

2.  What experience and background do you have which qualifies you for this position?

Since the Office of Coroner is a Law Enforcement Agency, I bring 24 years of law enforcement experience to the table. I have supervised thousands of Death Investigations, had over 200 hours of continuing education, and have reviewed several previous death determinations. I am the only candidate that has reversed “wrong” death decisions and am in the process of changing others wrongfully determined.

3.  What will be your greatest challenge if elected?

My greatest challenge if elected will be dealing with career politicians who do not understand the importance of what we do. We have had several Homicides and Suspicious Deaths in Kane County in the last 3 years. Scientifically establishing the Cause and Manner of Death is paramount in helping the police and prosecutors hold criminals accountable. Also, people deserve to know why their loved ones pass. As the statutes state, we are to ‘definitely determine’ the Cause and Manner of Death in all coroner’s cases, besides Homicides because there may be civil ramifications that need addressing. This is why the statutes do not limit autopsies to just Homicides.
