The LWVUS position is:

Global climate change is one of the most serious threats facing our nation and our planet today. Increasingly severe consequences are projected for more people and more regions of the world unless we act now — as individuals, as communities, and as a nation. For its par, the League is calling for prompt action to cut this country’s GHG emissions, freeze construction of new coal-fired power plants, invest in a new clean energy economy, and help the world’s poorest countries tackle the challenges of climate change.

State and local Leagues, and individual League members, have a critical role to play in helping to limit future climate change  and protect the planet.

As a local committee we plan to:

  • help people in their community learn what they can do at the individual and household levels to save energy and reduce their carbon footprint,
  • work with their community to set emissions-reduction goals and then develop and implement a plan to achieve these goals, and
  • work with other grassroot organizations on climate change at the local, state and federal levels, including eventual ratification of an effective international climate agreement.
